Review: Global Knife (Giveaway now closed)

September 26, 2011

Here’s a little something to brighten up a Monday morning – I’m very pleased to announce my first Fabulicious Food! giveaway from my new home.

If you were to ask any chef what the most important piece of equipment in their kitchen is, I’m sure their answer would be – a good quality, sharp knife.  Sharp, is indeed, the first word that springs to mind when I think of my Global knife, although I suppose any old knife can be sharpened.  But finding a knife that carries a mark of quality is an altogether different matter.

Throughout many of my recent foodie adventures I have spotted and encountered many Global knives. Many of my cooking and tasting notes (both from cookery school classes  I’ve taken and more recent blogging events) feature the word ‘Global’ – scribbled down, capitalised and underlined. Japanese knives and in particular, Global knives, are used in many professional kitchens. Global knives are now also officially endorsed by the mighty Roux Family who have enjoyed a strong relationship with Global for many years with Global also being the sponsors of The Roux Scholarship.

Michel Roux Jnr, Chef Patron of the iconic restaurant ‘Le Gavroche’ now personally endorses a range within the brand, called the Michel Roux Jnr Range. His knife sets are available as a 3 piece starter set, 6 piece intermediate set and a 9 piece professional set. There are also some pretty nifty block sets in the range, so, if you’re looking for something very special to add to your Christmas wish-lists, I’d definitely recommend sticking on one of those. All of the knives and blocks in the range carry Michel Roux Jnr’s signature.

It’s fair to say, with this much prestige (and being a tiny bit of a fan of Michel Roux Jnr) I was eager to own one of these coveted specimens myself and so when I spotted Helen’s giveaway at Fuss Free Flavours, I immediately set about tweeting like a mad woman to win.  Luckily for me, the stars were shining brightly and I did win one – a GS-39 Fluted Vegetable chopper, which is a stunning knife and perfect for me.

Since using it, I’ve found that my Global knife makes chopping and preparing food in the kitchen a breeze. I am able to finely chop vegetables without the need to bring out the food processor or mini-chopper, though it must be said, I do take the utmost care when using it. My fingers are kept well out of the way and with little people in the house my Global knife is kept well out of reach and never goes near the dishwasher. It is well-looked after and has definitely become my most treasured kitchen possession.

Apart from being endorsed by the Roux family (all of them use Global) there is some pretty impressive manufacturing techniques behind Global knives. They were first designed in 1985 by Mr Komin Yamada. He was commissioned to design a range of knives that would appeal to both professionals and amateur chefs, that were comfortable and easy to handle and that would meet the most demanding requirements. Taking his inspiration from the Samurai sword, Global knives are made from the finest high carbon stainless steel available for producing professional quality kitchen knives and balanced by hollow handles filled with sand.  Global knives are also smooth and seamless, making them more hygienic. The are also extremely comfortable to handle.

In the UK Global knives are distributed by a small firm in Sheffield called Grunwerg who have over 60 years of experience in developing new brands and ranges and if you are looking for an excellent quality sharp knife, I really don’t think you could do much better than a Global.

GIVEWAY NOW CLOSED

WINNER – CRAIG COCKBURN

Thank you to Hannah at Grunwerg for arranging this Global Knife Giveaway.

A Global Knife would change my life because I now have time to experiment with my cooking. My 3rd and final son has moved out and no longer does the menu revolve around him. Although he is very adventurous in his tastes his punctuality left me with a more limited menu.I would love a new knife to start me on my way.

This would change my cooking as about a month ago my beloved chopping knife broke (the handle came off). I was devastated as I did everything in the kitchen with it. I have been unable to find one of equal quality and since then found it impossible to chop finely and the knife I am now using often slips on the foods making it difficult to work with. To win this would be amazing and make my life in the kitchen a dream!!

I am struggling to type this as I’ve 2 plasters on, and one scab, on my right hand. All due to having to use a lot of force on blunt knives to cut veg. I hear sharp knives mean you don’t have watery eyes when chopping onions. I was going to say that I will cross my fingers for a tear free kitchen but realised this would make my typing even more laborious!

My current small knife is fine, but although it takes a very sharp edge it loses it’s sharpness very quickly. The hard steel used in Global knives will help me keep my edge for much longer i.e. less sharpening and quicker prep times.

It would change the way I cook because…
Even though you can buy a lot of veg etc in tins nowadays, when preparing fresh, it does take a lot of time and concentration, especially cooking for a lot of people or you have to have different knives for different foods and/or equipment.
So having this, would ease the preparation and also, save money in the long run, as different knives, equipment etc may not be needed!

Had a little accident last year and have difficulty using my thumb and gripping objects, the handle on the knife looks like it could be very useful (and much safer, OH gas to leave the room when I am using a kife now)

The Global Knife would change the way I cook, as I currently have a blunt set of knives which are absolutely useless. I have now started to rip, herbs and salads and then have to get the food processor out, which just makes extra washing up.

Hopefully It will half my washing up and ensure I can spend more time with a glass of wine.

Ooooh – I would LOVE a Global knife! I have a keen interest in cookery but am building up/replacing standard hardware slowly, going for quality over quantity. I currently boast one (1) decent knife – an Io Shen, but I’m told that Global knives beat even Io Shen for quality and functionality.

I would use this knife for the myriad of chopping that goes into the old faithful stew as the weighted handle would, I suspect, greatly assist in taming a rock hard Swede – sorry to put a downer on you and remind you that it’s nearly stew time, but there it is!

I’ve been eying up these knives with envy ever since I first came across them, but still don’t have one of my own. This would change the way I cook by speeding things up hugely and allowing me to actually tackle things like pumpkins and large squashes, which are virtually impossible with my tiny knife.

It would just be nice not to worry about finely slicing things – my knives are good at chunking, not so great at slicing!

I have a knife I love and use all the time however it gets blunt very quickly and needs constant sharpening due to how old it is. I would love a new knife but now I have 2 small children I can not afford to spend the sort of money I would like on a knife and getting a cheap one would be worse than my old much loved one. I cook family meals all the time and a new knife would make it so much quicker and easier. xxx

I would be able to prepare meat better with your knifes

What a wonderful giveaway! A Global knife would change the way I cook because having a sharp knife of such high quality would make chopping things so muck quicker and easier! (My knives suffered after four years of university and careless housemates…)

These knives would help me cook so much quicker, at the minute i have to constantly sharpen my knives before cutting and peeling veg so takes me double the time. This knife set would really help xx

A global knife would make a big difference to the way i cook! At the moment I struggle to chop certain foods finely enough, especially onions! I hate cutting tomatoes into slices for pizzas as the knife I have tends to push to hard on the skin before it starts cutting and ends up with a half exploded mess! haha

The preparation time with this amazing knife would be definately shorter than with my old blunt one I have at home 🙂 Therefore I would have more time to experiment and try new recipes.

I’ve heard it said that a sharp knife is not as dangerous as a blunt knife – I definitely need a Global knife before I do myself some serious damage.

This would change the way I cook because it is going to be sharp enough to cut things up, unlike my old set that only just go through butter!!!

With a global knife: I’d be able to do that manic chop-chop-chop woodpecker style way of chopping herbs that you see professional chefs do, rather than a rather blunt, mediocre, thud…..thud…..thud that ends up taking 5 minutes rather than 10 seconds (the current method in my kitchen.)

Just about to enter the competition via all the other methods. I found your blog from the Channel 4 recommendation.
